All WPS Safeguarding Policies are updated annually.
How we keep our children safe:
- At WPS we are committed to promoting the safeguarding and welfare of our children
- Our Child Protection Policy explains how we work together to keep our children safe
- Copies of this policy and other school copies are available free of charge from our school office
- Our designated Safeguarding Lead is Elsa O’Connor, Assistant Headteacher
- Our deputy designated Safeguarding Lead is Jane Ngenda, Headteacher
- Our lead governor with responsibility for safeguarding is Andrew Cocklin, he is supported in this role by our Chair of Governors Dr Jason Kirby

Keeping Children Safe in Education 2024 Part 1
The WPS Code of Conduct for School Employees is our Staff Handbook. This details how staff fulfill the responsibilities of their roles as WPS employees and apply our WPS Professional Standards as part of the Woolton Way.

We have developed a wider range of policies to ensure we provide a safe and secure learning environment for all our children. Paper copies of these polices can be provided free of charge by our school office.
These include: WPS Emergency Evacuation and Lockdown Procedures, First Aid and Accident Procedure, Health and Safety Policy and a wide range of risk assessments.
WPS staff and governors attend annual safeguarding training and receive regular safeguarding updates throughout each academic year.
The Annual Child Protection training and update for WPS staff took place on 12th October 2022.
The Designated Safeguarding Lead and Deputy are both fully trained to lead this role and attend full annual training additionally .

To ensure all staff appointed to work at WPS are suitable and safe to work with our children we always apply safe safer recruitment practice.
The Headteacher, Senior leaders and Governors have completed safer recruitment training.
WPS staff receive a range of additional training and guidance that further enables them to maintain the safety of our children.
This includes :Annual health and Safety Training, Fire Marshall, First Aid, Educational Visits and Coshh training.
Safeguarding within the WPS Curriculum
Through our WPS curriculum we teach our children about their own safety and continually share safe messages and information at every opportunity. This includes regular updates about online safety, maintaining personal safety, anti-bullying messages and equality work. We use guidance and information provided by the NSPCC to support our teaching of safe messages.

Our teaching of PSHCE ( Personal, Social and Health Citizenship and Economic Education) enables children to be taught about personal safety, hygiene, feelings, emotions and to maintain healthy lifestyles. This includes work about dental hygiene which is a local priority.

SMSC (Spiritual, moral, social and cultural education) themes and messages are taught across all subjects ensuring our children develop a wider understanding of equality, develop empathy and a reflective approach to their daily lives.
Health and Development
Safeguarding is also defined as supporting the health and development of our children.
At WPS we promote the health and well-being of all our children in order to maximise their readiness to learn.
Through our broad curriculum we promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of our children in order to prepare them for experiences, opportunities and responsibilities in later life.
To support the health needs of children with more serious medical conditions, school staff receive training and regular updates on:
- Diabetes – monitoring blood sugar levels and ensuring they remain stable,administering insulin injections, recording information for parents/carers
- Asthma – Full procedures are outlined in our Asthma Policy document, care plans are clearly displayed in classrooms, pupils are allowed immediate (supervised) access to inhalers
- Anaphylaxis/Allergies – Epi-pen training,practices reviewed regularly with class teachers, staff aware of allergens
- Physical disabilities – Access arrangements are reviewed annually, please follow the blue link below to view our Accessibility Plan
WPS Accessibility Plan 2023-24
Our School Nurse visits school regularly and is available to provide help and support for parents and carers through monthly drop in sessions or by contacting her through the school office, admin@wooltonprimary.com.
Sex and Relationships Education
Children in Year Five and Six are taught the statutory requirements of the Science aspects of the National Curriculum.
Children in Y6 take part in further work to ensure they are prepared for their KS 3 transition.
Educational Visits at WPS
Children at WPS take part in a range of educational trips and visits throughout the school year. Children in Y4 & Y6 attend residential trips to the Kingswood Colomendy Center.
Miss H Boag – Munroe is the WPS EVC (Educational Visits Co-ordinator) and attends annual training to support this role.
WPS has adopted the Local Authority Educational Visits Policy for risk assessing trips and visits and submits all risk assessments to the LA for approval via the Evolve system.
